Akaiwa Rock Climbing

Mount Akaiwa is one of Hokkaido’s most celebrated and historic rock‑climbing districts, where dramatic reddish‑brown cliffs and jagged peaks rise straight from the Sea of Japan.

The coastal crags stretch for several kilometres and contain over 200 routes — from short single‑pitch sport lines to sustained multi‑pitch trad climbs — that suit beginners through to highly experienced climbers. Popular sectors such as West Akaiwa and East Akaiwa offer rugged ridgelines and exposed faces that reward climbers with wide ocean vistas and memorable seaside routes.

For guided trips, local operators can provide equipment, route selection and safety support tailored to ability and desired experience; TAKT offers green‑season outdoor guiding out of the Sapporo/Otaru area and can assist with rock‑climbing outings to Akaiwa, including arranging guides, transport and program details.
